Fixing sensitive mouse on Dell XPS 13 9370 “Developer Edition” (i.e. Ubuntu 18.04 OEM)

I was having trouble with the mouse being too sensitive on my touchpad. After googling around I found this Dell page. I’ve followed the instructions (it was last updated Feb 2019), with the following changes and modifications:

  1. substituting 18.04 for 16.04 in all kernal and file names (e.g. in Step 3);
  2. substituting 51- for * in Step 5 iii in the file name sudo gedit /usr/share/x11/xorg.conf.d/*synaptics-quirks.conf (there was no synaptics-quirks.conf on my system, so it was a new file I needed to name explicitly; I used 51- because that was the number they had in their screenshot);
  3. Dropping xorg-input-abi-24 from the command in Step 6 (xorg-input-abi-24 is a virtual package and you need to explicitly choose a candidate according to the error message I got; xserver-xorg-core-hwe-18.04 (see above, #1) is one of the candidates and it is already installed);
  4. skipping Step 7 (blacklisting the synaptics driver), since there was no /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/*synaptics.conf on my system.

Not 100% sure if it is working yet. Mouse seems more draggy; but it did jump once in writing this blog. Time will clearly tell.

Good on Dell to have a page on this, though!
